Up for sale is an antique Western Union Telegraph Company padlock, a unique piece of American history likely from around the 1890s to early 1900s and not specifically 1936 as imprinted on the shackle. The date on the shackle may refer to a specific issue or inventory year, but the lock design and maker are associated with an earlier period. This lock features a classic, sturdy, heart-shaped design made of solid brass, which has developed a beautiful, aged patina over time. The key drop cover is clearly embossed with the operational instruction: "PUSH SHACKLE IN TO GET KEY OUT". The body is also marked with "WESTERN UNION TEL. CO" on the back. The internal mechanism is characteristic of those manufactured by the E.T. Fraim Lock Co. or the J.H.W. Climax Co. of Newark, NJ. These utility locks were used by linemen to secure telegraph and early telephone company property. A section of the original chain is still attached to the shackle.
