In the 1970s, Randy Merrell, a custom cowboy boot maker in Vernal, Utah, began making hiking boots to test his skills as a shoemaker. The high-quality, custom-made boots, made using the same lasts as his prized cowboy boots, quickly gained popularity across the United States by word of mouth, with people saying they were "incredibly comfortable and fit well." In 1981, they were selected as "the most functional and comfortable shoes in North America" by Backpacker Magazine. Reacting to this article were John Schweitzer and Clark Matis, both avid outdoor enthusiasts with a deep knowledge of boots. The two were looking for the ideal hiking boots, and their meeting with Randy Merrell was truly a fateful one. The combined efforts of these three individuals led to the birth of the Merrell Boot Company. With a policy of "allowing no compromise," they continue to maintain the highest quality to this day.
